Question Blue smoke on startup

Hey guys-

Let me first say I got my 90 ranger for $800 and it runs perfect (tranny problems are being ironed out now) but the engine is smooth and so quiet you can't hear it when your driving. I've tuned it up (plugs, wires) and changed the oil (valvoline max life) and flushed and filled the coolant. Well on startup I see a Very brief puff of blue smoke- which is gone right away. I know blue smoke usually means bad rings or valves- but is this normal or is it serious? It has lots of power and runs so well starts instantly and like I said its only on startup.

By the way the truck has 147,000 miles on it. Let me know what you guys think.

Yep sounds like valve seals. When they get worn a little oil leaks around them into the combustion chamber when it is parked and burns blue when it starts. don't worry unless it gets really bad. Just check the oil level often and keep it full.

My experience has also shown that you probably have a valve guide or seal issue. If you like, you can run a compression test to rule out the rings. If the puff of blue bothers you, you may be able to replace the valve guide seals without pulling the heads but you'll have to do a little investigating on this. I know on some C****s this can be done and it's a real time saver.

So do you think that using valvoline max life will help fix this problem? Cuz max life is supposed to have that seal conditioner in it that stops oil from seeping- I have seen it work before as far as stopping leaks on valve covers and oil pans.

Miracles in a can are usually just that, but it probably won't hurt to try.

Ranger 90:

I changed the valve guide seals on my 4-cyl '90 Ranger a couple of weeks ago. Had the same thang going on with a big puff of smoke on start-up and after idling at a long traffic light. Not enough time has passed to be able to determine any change in the oil consumption. If it is of any consolation, my Ranger made it to 208,000 miles before I chose to do something about it.

You are correct about the motor oils, their additives are all over the spectrum with seal softeners and what ever else you can think of. My Ranger goes through Valvoline at 200 miles a qt. + - but Shell Rotella stays in there. Go figure.

Good Luck

Russ
