Friend has a 1998 F150 5.4L, Just lately his truck seems to be heating up a bit, He has flushed out his rad, changed the thermostat and it still heats up. It occurs when he slows down, comes to a stop and just sitting and idling. It started about a week ago. Now, when he starts up, we could hear a bit of a rattled, similiar to a clicking type sound in the front, however when he stops it and starts it again quickly, the sound is not there. Could it be his water pump is shot and needs replacement ?? Are they difficult to change, etc,,,
Forgot to mention that when he is idling at high speed, it doesn't heat up.
If it only happens when he is idling, more than likely the cooling fan isn't coming on. I've never had problems with it, but on everything else that's had the problem it has been the coolant temp sensor or a bad fan.
When the truck is idling, pop the hood and see if the fan starts up. If it doesn't, it's probably the sensor.
I've never done one of these on one of these trucks, but I hope this helps!
Thanks, I'll pass it on to him, come to think of it, my mother had a "dodge" and it wsa doing the same thing, heating up when it was idling or travelling at slow speed, found out it was the sensor on the fan, the "low speed" one was out, got it replaced and never had the problem again.
Check the fan clutch. With the engine off, grab fan and wiggle back and forth. Also with hood up and engine running give it some throttle, the fan clutch should engage then slow down.
Make sure you look when you are wiggling the fan, that the water pump isn't wiggling. Is there any coolant coming out of the weep hole, if so the water pump is bad. If your fan clutch is bad, then you only have to replace the clutch. Let us know what you find? Rich
another test is to let it heat up abit at idle then turn it off while whatching the fan. if the fan seems to freewheel and not stop quite quickly the fan clutch will need replaced. the water pump is'nt difficult to replace .
