I have a '93 XLT that had the 5.0 roller motor stock (and the rebuilt Jasper is also a roller) It has a custom grind comp (roller) cam. I understand that the stock 5.0 Firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 all except for HO (roller?) motors which are the same as a 351 [1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8] If the thing is set up wrong that would surely explain a heck of alot of headaches lately. Would it even run anywhere close to right with the wrong firing order?
If it is the wrong one, could I just move the wires to their proper places? (Told you it was stupid.)
The lobe seperation is 112. I know that most experts say 114 minimum. I've been around the block three and a half times trying to figure out a solution between Jasper, the engine shop and whether or not to burn a chip, swap cams or go to MAF. I actually stumbled upon the firing order while rubbing my noggin trying to make an informed decision.
well you have answered your own question. the speed density needs the larger lobe seperation. i bet if you changed cams to one with 114ls you will run much much better. cam 35-225-5 is a good cam that has the 114ls and gives good gains. might throw that in and sell your cam on ebay. have you read fordfuelinjection.com might check into it , lots of good info.
Actually 35-255-5 is a flat tappet cam and will not work with my roller motor. I did a little more research and the lobe seperation is not really the issue here since the original lobe separation of the stock cam is 104/111 (107.5) [Mustang HO cams have 115/115 lobe seperation]
However, the gross lift of my cam is .480/.480, almost an inch over stock which I think is the culprit. I think I am over-cammed and getting converter lockup way before Im in the powerband for one thing. Another is that I am getting conflicting information on whether the roller truck motors (stock since 1992 but I think phased in) are HO or not and whether they should properly run on the original 5.0 firing order or the the 351/HO firing order. My truck now is roller but with old style firing order 1-5-etc.

I have an experiment that I am going to try with a late model speed density mustang computer to see if it will better tolerate the cam lift. I'm also going to verify which firing order is going to run better. I've been told that some wrenches use the 1-5 firing order even on HOs to gain better low end torque. go to that website i mentioned early and email Ryan. he runs the site , explain your issues and he should be able to set you strait. the guy knows his stuff.
