looking for opinions

hey guys...I'm new to this site and am looking for a few opinions. I am looking at buying a 96 F150 with the I6...it has a 5sp Man Tranny and 3.08 (I think) gears. The body is is great shape and the truck appears to have been well taken care of. My question is about the engine... it has 150,000 miles on it. There is a mild whine (I've been told this is normal...from the timing gears) and a slight tick i believe to be from a lifter but other than that it sounds great.I don't know much about these motors and would apreciate any input.....Can i expect much more life from the engine....Any know problems with...ect....thanks

oh btw...the truck will be used for highway driving and light duty hauling...not looking for speed just reliability....price is $3200.00...thanks again

150k? It's just getting broken in. The 300 is bullit proof and for what you want to use it for it sounds like the perfect truck. Just because I'm a cheap ******* I'd talk them down a little on the price but in all honesty it's probably worth that. Don't worry too much about the noise. If you do buy it putting a cat back system will wake up the motor some.

In 450,000 miles, my 1981 F-150 with the 300-6, 4-speed manual, I've gone through...

1 Clutch
3 starters
1 waterpump
1 mastercylinder
1 radiator
1 carb
1 distributor
2 Thermactor Tubes
2 headlamp switches
all the computer components,

The Engine however is original! The only time the valve cover has ever been removed is to replace the gasket!

Can't beat the 300 in my opinion,

In my opinion the 300 is Ford's best motor. I bought my '92 a little over a year ago and have put 20,000 hard miles on it and all I've replaced is the alernator. It's got 151,000 miles on it and it still runs like new. In reference to the noise every 300 makes some kind of noise, don't worry about it and look forward to many trouble free miles.
