I have a 1983 F250XLT and I'm having a problem with the power door locks. The switches on both sides will unlock the doors, but neither of them will lock the doors. Anybody know where the problem might be and any other advice before I start tearing into the doors?
How often do you lubricate the door linkages, hinges, etc?
It might be as simple as that. A good silicone spray works really nice, and protects rubber parts too. Spraying it in your rubber window guides will keep your windows running smoothly too.
I know on certain years (not sure about the 1980 - 1986 years though) that there is a "solonoid" connected to the ignition lock (via wires) that will prevent the doors from being locked if you leave (or it thinks you leave) your keys in the ignition. Lubicate the ignition lock as well with silicone spray, and insert and remove your key a couple of times.
Although the above might not help the situation, it couldn't hurt either...
Lubicating the Ign lock will not help his problem, in some years of Fords that I have come across..the locks only unlock the doors. Electric locks are one of these styles.

There is nothing in the ignition switch itself that will even prevent the lock from unlocking, 1995 and up, if the key in certain models are left IN the ignition, the electric door locks will lock, even if you're standing outside ...with the doors close. Those models are too numerious to mention here....again also use a dry Graphical spray to lube your locks...not any kind of oil or wd-40 or silicone. (Because it attracts airborne dirt, an makes your lock wear faster overtime, I know because I repair them)
Thanks, I'll look into it. Its like there is no power going to either switch when I try to lock the doors with the switches, with or without the key in the ignition. Its really no big deal, just wondering if anybody might know what was wrong.
Some models require the key to be in the on position for the "lock switch" on the panel to come on...also there is a fuse under the column or in the glove compartment under lock...check your fuse. If not that then the wire that leads to the fuse is broken or not connected. Some models doesn't require the key to be in the on postion. For both side to not work, suggests that the fuse is either not good or there is a broken wire before the fusebox, if its after the fuse, it will go to ground and blow the fuse....
