351W Help
New member here with a thorny problem. I have an '86 F150 with a 351W. I installed a new short block about 2 years ago. I have put less than 1000 miles on this block as it is not a daily driver. Recently I started welding starter solenoids shut. I have replaced the solenoid, all battery and starter cables and the starter. It keeps welding solenids. I took an amp reading of the starter during cranking. It was 225 Amps. Normal should be 60-90 Amps. That tells me one of two things. Either the starter windings are breaking down causing high resistance and amp draw, or there is a mechanical problem with the motor. I put a torque wrench on the balancer pulley and found that it takes 70 ft.lbs. torque to get the motor turning by hand. Once it is turning it takes about 50 ft.lbs to keep it turning. I did this test with all of the accessory belts on and the plugs pulled. Does 70 ft.lbs seem normal? If it is high, I gues it is time to tear the motor down and see what is causing all of the drag.
TIA
