Have '98 explorer xlt w/ sohc. 70000 miles. Engine has lack of power through all speeds. It acts like it's not firing on all cyl from 30-40 mph and 50-60 mph. Engine produces no codes. Almost acts like maybe one of the cats is plugged. Just replaced wires, plugs, air and fuel filters with no change in performance.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Jul-02 AT 07:21 AM (EST)]Did you reset the ECU after changing the plugs and stuff? I run a bottle of STP through mine every four or five fill ups and also clean the throttle body at every oil change. So far, no problems and she just went over 67,000.
I had a shop do the work. The vehicle had posted no codes, however, the OM indicated a plug change at around 65000 miles, so I thought it would be a good idea. Mechanic said he had another explorer in that had a similar prob. Turned out to be a clogged cat. Again, there were no codes on that vehicle either. The new plugs and wires have not done anything for it.
When I read your post, it brought back some bad memories. My '97 SOHC 6 demonstrated the same problem. On mine, turned out to be an issue with the infamous timing chain tensioners. That was at 71,000 miles. The dealer told me I was looking at "total engine replacement." I told them I didn't buy that. So, I kept on driving it with the continued lack of power (not worsening over time). Then, last week the inevitable happened - timing chain broke - and, total engine replacement! I did, however, get 100,010 miles out of it before it died. The new engine is sweet! I had forgotten about all the power I was missing. I hope you do not have the same experience, and that the fix is a simple air filter or the similar. But, you may want to look into the tensioner issue if you havn't already. Good luck!
