Ok hear me out.
How cool would it be to swap a 2speed rear end out of a F600/700 into a 73-79 F250 4x4. Think about the ungodly pullingpower when the truck is in 1st gear low range 4low especially when mated to something like a 390 and Np435. The only problem would be finding a ring gear for the front axle to match the gearing in the rear. I do not plan to do this, but I thought about it the other day when I was hauling a load of lumber in my 86 F700 w/429 4V. hehehe
Having been up close to a 2 speed in the old man's F600 and '51 Cornbinder, I can tell you they are a tad too large for a one ton. You would have some serious engineering to do, lots of added weight from the axle and from the reinforcements and if in a 4x4, one false shift while in 4WD and something is going to break big time.
Check out GearVendors for an OD to be used in 2WD. At $2500+, it's still cheaper that what you're talking, unless you use junk parts that need to be rebuilt and can do it all yourselfe, including making the special sized wrenches for the hubs.
