Thinking About Buying a F700

Hey guys. Im thinking about buying a F700 off my workplace. Its already has a pretty short wheelbase, so Id probably remove the flatbed and install a F-350 dually bed and use it as a truck. A really BIG truck!

I only have 2 concerns. First off... Its gas. It sports a 390 (maybe 391?) engine. No biggie, Im just going to count on extremely poor fuel mileage. If cash flow is good, Id swap in something more formidable like a 5.9 Cummins or possibly a semi engine such as a Detroit.

Then secondly, its definitely an "In Town" truck. It only has a 4 speed manual tranny and some incredibly low gears. No split shift either. I doubt it'd keep up with highway traffic. Would an axle out of a different era of truck work? Iv got a few 10.25 Sterling rear axles laying around, ones even a 4.10 LS, but not a dually.

If the 10.25 axle wont work, Ill probably swap the duals for a super single

Thanks guys!

I got a 73' F500. Split axle is the only thing that makes it useable on a hwy. I SEEM to be getting about 7-8mpg. Sweet truck, fires up every time and is a breeze to drive (although the breeze might be moving faster).

How much do they want? I got mine for $600

6 on 8.75". Lots of wheels available including tubeless.

An F500 would be more likely to have a 330 FT motor, not a 391 or even a 361. Do you know if it is an FT motor? Iron front cover with a motor mount incorporated, and the rear mounts part of the bell?

Ill take a look but I seem to remember popping the hood awhile back and seeing 391. That may be our chipper truck too. And Iv slept since then lol.

As for price: they've gotta run it by a few people and they have to approve beforehand so it should be on the market this month sometime. They will then put it on an internet auction (not ebay) and let it go. For reference, a late 80s van with 13,000 miles sold for around $1500...

4th digit of VIN is the engine code. FT engines installed in 1966/78 500 and larger series trucks (1964/65's use different FT VIN engine codes):

C = 330 2V Medium Duty / D = 330 2V Heavy Duty / E = 361 2V or 4V (1973/78) / F = 391 4V
