Well the Ford dealer made me an offer today I couldn't refuse. I traded my 2001 SD V10 4x4 XLT 37,000 miles for a 2002 Lariat SD 7.3l Diesel 4X2 with 40,000 miles for $7000 difference. I hope I didn't give away to much. V10 was a great truck no problems with engine although it was always hungry.
But I am going to spend next summer in Canada and Alaska I didn't think I would be very happy at 8mpg pulling a trailer with the V10.
I don't know much about diesels as I have never owned one, but I understand there is more maintenance to them than a gas engine.
I would have bought a 6.0 but for all the horror stories I have heard about it.
Three years ago I went to Alaska in the V10 and I think 3 out of 4 trucks on the road going up and back were 7.3liter diesels.
Maintenance isn't that bad on the PSD. You're gonna spend more on oil changes, and change the fuel filter about every 15K. Other than that, I think it's actually cheaper in the long run to own a diesel. Fuel economy when towing is much better, and the engine will last forever. Take care of it, and it will treat you right. My '02 has close to 60K, so it's just now nice and broke in
Most of my family owns PSD's. We are firm believers.
