What gears do i have?

I just bought a used 93 Bronco, which has 39's on it and the guy i bought it from said that he had 4.56 gears put into the axles, but after driving the bronco it seems like there is no way it has 4.56 gears. I was wondering how in the hell i figure out what kind of gears i have. Thanks

Jack a rear tire off the ground, and put a chalk mark on the top of the driveshaft right next to the rear axle (where you can see if from the wheel well). Turn the tire 1 revolution and count how many times that chalk mark rotates (make sure you're in neutral or you can't turn it). If it rotates 4.5 times, it's a 4.56 gear.

With an open diff, you have to turn the tire through 2 revolutions because the diff will mechanically average the motion of the rotating and the stationary wheels.

You can always pop the diff cover off, count the teeth on the ring gear, count the teeth on the pinion gear, divide the ring gear teeth by the pinion gear teeth and there's you're ratio. Good excuse to change the gear oil, which may be full of water if the previous owner liked to go mudding alot, and find out what kind of differential you have in there too.

Can anyone tell me what the stock rearend was geared at on an 86 F250 6.9 w/C6? And can I change that at all to try to increase fuel mileage?

Look on your rear axle for a tag attatched to one of the cover bolts. The ratio will be on that tag. If the tag isn't there, post the numbers stamped into the axle tube and one of us should be able to tell from that what the ratio is. Another way is to look on the door sticker under 'axle' and post the code you see there. The ratio could be anything from 3.55 to 4.10. Your axle should be a 10.25" Ford. Yes, you can change the gears in your axle. What ratio to change to for better mileage depends on what size tires you're running and what you use the truck for.
