A common problem on the older Ford radios was the "back-light" bulb would go out, causing the display not to work. On the newer radios, there is a DC to DC power supply for the display that goes out. This power supply is on the PCB that the display is mounted on, and usually, the problem is bad solder joints.

I had the same problem in my 98. It's still common. I had mine repaired under my extended warranty. Some people just buy an aftermarket radio. However, someone HAS posted the fix here before, looks like someone who can solder can fix it on their own, I was just too lazy to do it myself

Cost me $100 to have mine fixed at a local electronics shop.
If I had the same problem again, I probably would try fixing it myself.
