Increasing Idle?
My '97. 4.0L A/C compressor continually short turns on and off (every 3 seconds) at idle. When the compressor goes on the idle drops enough to make the computer think it need to lighten the load on the engine and so it turns the compressor off! This cycling continues until the engine speed is raised. Usual reply from the dealer: no codes, nothing wrong. Is there a mechanical way to raise the idle speed a little and save wear and tear on the AC components?

It sounds more like your system is low on refrigerant. The idle is factory-set and if you mess with it, the computer will be thrown off and try to compensate for the higher idle, leading to more problems. Take it a reputable A/C tech in your area and have them look at it. Most dealer service shops are not skilled enough to troubleshoot A/C systems and won't mess with them. My 92 Explorer was doing the same thing so I added some refrigerant and it stayed engaged when the A/C was on and disengaged when I turned it off...
