My King Pin Experience...

If you want good mechanics shops that can help you out then Missouri seems to be the wrong place! Some guys acted like they didn't even know that it was a real part! I ended up taking my I-beam to the auto skills center on base here and they have a 20 ton press. I put enough pressure on the king pins to scare me enough to quit and they did not move. I then called a mechanic back home in Indiana who usually works on older stuff and he told me that you have to beat on them. He told me to keep hitting it until it started moving no matter how long it took. He also said to heat the I-beam around the kingpin. After about 1 hour of pounding it started to move. I finally got the spindle back on and it feels like a new piece!

Guys! Grease your king pins regularly! I can see no problems getting these things out if they were kept lubed. The guy who owned the truck before me obviously thought grease was unnecessary.

Passenger side will be tomorrow. It should go much quicker. I could have done that side in 2 hours max if I new then what I know now.

When I get my spindles for disc brakes the swap should be very easy! Nothing is froze up!

Put anti-seize on your parts when assembling them.

Usually when you put the king pins under pressure with the press you can shock them with a hammer blow that will loosen the pin. Use heat with extreme care.

I dont want to have to get into my Kingpins...When I left California for Virginia, and gave my Dad the F250..cause it had the C6 in it..(he had 2 hips replaced)

And his truck a 92 Ford Dually w/a stick...he couldnt shift anymore...
I know with him being the way he was..Those kingpins havent seen grease in 15 years.. Good Luck..Russ

Yeah, the drums do work pretty good for what I do but the only time I am going over 70MPH is at the dragstrip. I just like the idea of having it if I ever did need it. The kingpin bearing was in pretty bad shape so that should help out. New wheel bearings and races make me feel better too. The old ones had some play in them but they still rolled pretty good. The expansion bolt holding the kingpins in was finger tight. That was pretty scarry.

I just used grease on the one I did yesterday. I will use antiseize on this one.

I pounded and pounded yesterday with no luck on mine. Would it do any good at this point to lube it or would that just make it messier to deal with? I've got the small hand-held torch; should I apply some heat with that or is that a bad idea?

Ric, Ya might break out the Liquid Wrench and hose eveything down and let it sit a day or so,and keep re-applying it...but watch the torch around that stuff, BOOM..

I just did my kp's and I could not get them to budge. I found a burr in the hole where the tapered bolt goes. I took a small file and just took out a little bit of the deformed notch on the old king pin then a little heat and a little hammering and out she came.
