Hello, I have been considering getting an explorer for my wife. But I can only afford one below 1995. Does anyone know the best years or year for these SUV's. It may be a tough question to answer because everyone has good and bad to say but just a general idea would be cool. Thanks.
91 - 94 are all the same truck. 95 was the first year of the 2nd generation Explorer. I have a 92 and have had no major problems, even after 140,000 miles. I would stay away from 91's simply because it was the first year of a new vehicle and most of the bugs hadn't been worked out yet...
I would go with the 95's if you can? I had a 95 and it was really good, traded up for a '99 with less miles. I heard the 4X4 in the '95 is a little better than the older ones. Just my opinion though.
What are you looking to spend on an Explorer? I picked up my 97 Sport for $8,300.00 and it's totally loaded up and has nice graphics on it and everything with 94,000 miles. I would think you might be able to find one with more miles for less. The economy seems bad right now. I've been trying to sell mine for two months now and haven't had a bite and I'm advertising mine less than everyone else for the make and year.
I love my 1994 Explorer XLT (2 wheel drive)! It took some getting used to though. The steering was a little different than what I was accustomed to but I got used to it in less than a week.
I didn't like the rough ride though so I replaced the tires. I bought Michelin Cross Terrain SUV tires. They've made a lot of difference in the ride especially on the highway and in wet weather (knock on wood).
I bought my Explorer used and didn't know it had a few existing minor problems. I needed 2 new rotors, brake shoes and a calliper lift because it vibrated between 60 and 70mph. This only cost me $250. Recently, I was told that I needed a new gear box (by the people who installed the new tires) however, I'm not sure this is true and 2 of my favorite mechanics don't believe it's necessary either.
The only thing I wish I could change about it is it likes to run a little warm (a little above the mid-way part between cold and hot). It only does this in heavy traffic on hot, humid days where the temperature is above 95 and the air quality is bad. However, with some good advice from the members here, it now seems to be under control.
I like it because it's powerful, rugged and roomy. I have been absolutely thrilled with my purchase!
Good luck!
