RE: Part Number: F6AZ17700AC, Mirror, Electrochromic/Compass Without Temp. Display (Not Equipped With Auto Dimming Headlight Sensor). I just purchased a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT and the rear view mirror that came with it is a manually adjusted day/night mirror with a thumb flip device on the bottom to adjust the mirror. A black box about 3x2" and 3/4" thick (think this is the compass thing) clips onto the mirror mount and has a white modular plug with 4 wires (black/white, orange/white, gray/yellow, and black/blue). I'd like to know if the new mirror I'd like to purchase will work in my truck, if it just plugs in pretty easily to the existing wires already there, or does it have a new complicated wiring harness. If there is an existing unused harness under the overhead console (as I have no sunroof) is it very difficult to remove the console, and do I have to remove any of the headliner too? Also, since my truck didn't come with this new mirror, do I need to add a fuse somewhere to protect it? Since this mirror is listed for sale without Auto Dimming Headlight Sensor, do I need to buy this too for the mirror to automatically dim as cars come up behind me? Do I have to remove the old mirror mount from the windshield and use a new one, or does this mirror just connect using the old windshield mount. Also, is the black box I referenced actually the Auto Dimming Headlight Sensor too or just the electronic guts for the compass? Please help with answers. Thanks! Larry...
The "black box" you're talking about is just for the compass. My 2004's auto-dimming mirror works from light hitting it thru the rear hatch (sensor's in the lower frame). Sorry, can't answer your other questions - hopefully someone else can. Good luck!!!
