Check Engine Light & Codes

The check engine light in my '94 Explorer (4.0/Auto) has come on 3 times, but only flashes a few times each occurance and then goes off. I took it in to have the codes read and they tried twice and the reader shows no codes/data. Does anyone have any suggestions? The only thing that is happening with the car is pinging under load and the fact that the temp gauge continually reads low. The temp reading is probably because the thermostat must be stuck open (again) and not letting the engine warm up fully. The exhaust pipe is black, but not sooty. The car has 92,000 miles. Thanks for any help.

Go ahead and replace the thermostat. The computer will keep the injectors 'rich' until the engine comes up to operating temperature. This is causing your black exhaust and your gas mileage should be down as well. The check engine light is probably flashing because a fault is temporary and has not been placed in the trouble code area of the computer memory. There could be a lot of things causing the light to flash and all are probably due to the engine not coming up to normal operating temperature.
