Extreme heat and extreme cold make syns the best choice.

but otherwise synthetic finds the leaks/bad gaskets sooner also if you have a manual tranny you don't want to use synthetic because it doesn't allow the synchros to work properly

personally with no more than you appear to drive that truck stick with the cheaper oils, yes syns will work better in extreme cold, but the differnce isn't that great.
We use synthetic in our semi's but that truck get about 230.000+ miles a year put on it,plus the heavy truck axle manufactures will increase the warrenty if you use them. the major advantage to synthetics is longer change intervals on the semi it increases it from 250,000 miles to 500.000.
but changed the fluids in a freinds 99 F250, had syn in the rear, and regular in the front (this is from the factory), and the oils both looked real good, and this truck runs around with the hubs locked in most of the time, and virtually no difference in wear.
I also personally pulled a D70hd out of a 1ton that had gone through 3 engines, and 1 tranny had approx 500,000 miles on it (was used to pull a bunk house on the wheat harvest for several years), and had never had the gear oil changed or and the only reason the axles where ever pulled was to put brakes on it, I pulled it apart to put lower gears in it, and the bearings were still in good shape altough were starting to show some wear, and the gears I sold to a friend (yes he knew how many miles were on them) and they looked fine no pitting, galling or other signs of problems, and this truck pulled 8000lb trailer virtually it's whole life. so I have to say the syns are not worth the extra cost, unless you are driving 100,000+ miles/yr

I run normal gear lube in my diffs......I am in and out of them so often that synthetics are just a waste.
