I have 130,000 miles on my eb 5.8 1996 bronco and this sunday the tranny started slipping and wouldn't go into gear. I'd rest it and it would go forward for several yards and slip again. Finally the engine would shudder even when the tranny is in park and then the engine would stall after I'd put it in drive. To prevent this stalling I stepped on the gas some and the whole engine stopped and froze on me. Wouldn't start. Had it towed. Now am unable to pull the tranny out as I cannot access the upper torque converter bolts from the flywheel and the tranny cannot be pulled out without the tc. The whole thing is frozen, am unable to rotate the tc and the crankshaft or pull the tranny out w/o the tc. Does this mean I have to crack the bellhousing? Much obliged.
You can leave the torque converter bolted to the engine and it will slip right off the input shaft to the tranny. Clearance will be your issue now. It's probably easier to pull the motor than the tranny if the torque converter is not removed.
thx for the input bigric.
but the tranny without the converter could not be pulled out even by three people with the car on a lift. Both units appear to be welded together. Can the entire unit(engine block and tranny be pulled out together from the front. It has ac and other accessories.
Yes it can, and the converter is not welded to the tranny in any way; it just slides onto the input shaft. If you're going that angle, I'd pull the motor and converter out the front then pull the tranny as a separate piece. It will be much easier to manage that way.
Bigric,
Thx again but the converter appears to be welded to the tranny. No amount of cajoling or muscle power could slip the tranny out of the converter bolted on to the flywheel. It seems that the converter is welded on to the tranny liked its been frozen.
The tranny could not be slipped out. Have you heard of something like this before?
