My wifes 94 has developed an annoying speedometer problem. Once you get above 50-55 MPH it jumps 10-15 mph and then sometimes comes back down for a bit then back up. It's started out bouncing some but I pulled the cluster out and lubed the cable. This quieted it down and stopped the bounce but the jump up and stay is still there. It has 156,000 miles on it (all original drive train, including battery and hoses for those who care)
Two basic questions, anybody know what to do to fix it. Or... Where is a good place to get a replacement?
I would try a wrecking yard. I picked up an entire cluster panel for my 91 for $70 . Ford wanted over $100 just for one of the gague packages. The individual gague packages just pop into the housing, so once it is removed from dash, changing them out is a snap.
Any ranger or Explorer dash 91 thru 94 are interchangeable. I think 91-92 have amber symbols on gagues and 93-94 changed to light blue symbols, but any will work just fine. At 156,000 miles, I wouldn't worry about the mileage it shows since you have exceeded the mechanical limits of the mileage indicator anyway (at least 91-92 only register up to 99,999 miles).
The 94 does have the 6 digit odometer so I would probably have to have it changed. When you looked at ordering from Ford did the price include setting the odometer to the current mileage? Do most shops have the ability to change an odometer or is this something that is allowed only by a select few??
I'll have to start calling around to junk yards tomorrow.
My parents had the same problem with their 94 Explorer a year or two ago. It turned out to be the speed sensor gear assembly. As I recall it's mounted on the transfer case. It only took me maybe 15 minutes to change and I think it cost about $30 at the Ford dealer.
