I was just lookin at my vehicle registration (I'm in Southern California), and I just noted that under Type Vehicle Use my truck is listed as Commercial. Don't know why I hadn't noticed that earlier. Do we get any perks for registering our trucks as commercial in SoCal? Anyone know? I was lookin at the dmv website, but I couldn't find anything.
From my knowledge, I do not think we can benifit from our trucks being listed as a commercial vehicle. All I know that we pay fees for the weight of our vehicle.
The only real perk you get is the use of the "yellow zone" curb areas without fear of getting a ticket. These are the commercial loading/unloading zones. Out side of that, the commercial plates cost you a couple hundered more dollars in registration each year. In CA all trucks must have commercial plates if they are classified as such. However, one can use personnel plates on a pickup truck if the truck has a permanently installed shell on the truck. In this case the body "type" for DMV is change to the same class as other SUVs, Excursions, ect...
Gets one away from having to pay the weight fee and save the $150 to $200/yr fees.
for some reason they consider a shell or tonue cover eliminated your truck from being used commerically. my truck is used in the winter to plow, so it is commerical, so i have commericial insurance, which i found out is cheaper than going with regular car insurance. also being a 1 ton doesnt help that whole commerical thing, weight twice as much as a typical car.

Umm I have personal plates, my truck is labeled commercial, and I don't have a shell, or toneau. I'm confused? I pay my plates based on max payload carried, becuz it's a commercial vehicle, and I haven't seen any savings.

OK,
Maybe it is my choice of words here..
By "personal" plates I meant the standard license plate (i.e non-commercial). I didn't mean the "vanity" plates that one can personalize. If a vehicle uses vanity plates (which it sounds like you have), the truck can be still be listed as a commercial vehicle and have to pay the weight fee.
