I bought a used F250 and it has BF Goodrich All Terrain TAs on it.
They are 33X12.5X16.5 The sidewalls are 3 ply. Rims are 16.5 X 12
I have been wheeling twice and both times I sliced a sidewall.
The terrain is mostly just dirt with some rock in it. Definately not rock climbing.
Are these sidewalls that bad or am I having a run of bad luck?
these sidewalls are known to be thin but the type of terrain you describe it should be able to hold up better than what your getting. mine hold up pretty well in this terrain because I'm on a lot of logging roads and branches and stumps are always poking at the tires and haven't had a torn sidewall. (yet) I think your just having bad luck with yours.
Your 12" wide wheels might contribute to the sidewall damage problem. Check out the recommended rim widths for 12.5-33 x 16.5's on the BFG website. I think that 9.75" is the recommended rim width for that tire.
I have run the identical tires on 9.75 - 16.5 rims on my F-250 since 1995 and have not seen sidewall cuts. Many, many scuff marks, but no penetration.
Sounds like you might need to be switching to something with a tougher sidewall, like a bias. The sidewalls on those at's aren't that great but neither is your luck from the sounds of it. Shredding tires is never fun.
Yeah, I think you're having a run of bad luck. The tires I'm running are only 2 ply sidewalls and i haven't torn one yet. All I've played in is rocks and stumps, enough to the point that I've blown out windows and have had rocks/tree branches literally poke holes in the body. I've had ALOT of scuffs and have had chunks of wood and rocks embedded where the bead meets the tire.
Either I'm having hella good luck or you're having hella bad luck.
the wider rims will allow the sidewall to flare out more then a narrorer rim. I'm running 10" wide rims on 31-10.5's on one truck and 31-10.5's on a 8" rim holds the sidewallb in more then mine. around a 10" wide rim is best all around on 12.5 tires. I had my 35-14.5's on a set of 8" wide rims for a bit I had more tread wrap around. The 10" wide rims show a tad more sidewall.
