Engine Code Camshaft Position Sensor

I have a 97 Ranger 2x4 with the small six cylinder engine. Recently my check engine light came on and I had it checked to reveal code P0340. The man told me it indicated that there was a problem with my Camshaft Position Sensor. I have since replaced the sensor. I reset the computer. The light turned off until the truck was started the second time. I have put nearly 1000 miles on the truck since the replacing the sensor. I had Autozone run the codes again to reveal the same apparent problem. Any advice on what to do next? I live in North Carolina and the state will not inspect the vehicle until the light has been satisfied. Thanks for any help offered.

Did you replace the entire shaft, or just the plastic sensor? The new sensor could be bad, the wiring to the sensor could be faulty, the shaft itself may have failed (fairly common) or it may not be properly timed to the engine. If you only replaced the sensor and not the shaft, my guess is the shaft has failed. Do a search on this forum for the CPS. There is a lot of information available. Good luck.

Hope this helps. If you look at the top of this forum at the "technical sticky", it's there.
