ABS Light On & Transmission Stuck on 1st gear

Yesterday when I started my car, a 2000 Ford Ranger, the ABS light came on. I was able to shift the car out of park. However, when I was driving, the transmission got stuck on first gear and it didn't want to switch to second gear. So, I had to manually switch it to 2nd gear. I have an automatic transmission. I never had signs of transmission problems and was wondering if it had to do with a malfunction of the ABS. I only started having this problem with the ABS light came on. I read other threads and was thinking it may be the vehicle speed sensor. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Your OBD II will give a code for what the problem is. Go to Autozone, they'll read it for free. It sounds like the vehicle speed sensor, it's an easy fix I'm told. Unplug it from the rear end, and replace it with a new one. They're about $12 or so. Ken

The problem was the VSS. My husband replaced the part last night. The ABS light is no longer on and my transmission is back to normal again. Thanks for your help.
