Exhaust harmonics

The set up is a 76 internal balanced 460 in a 86 F250.
The exhaust is a set of L&L headers that collect at my home made dual 2.5" into 4" Y pipe and continue 4" to a diesel type muffler and out the back side.
The right side merges only several inches out of the header collector where the left side has about 2.5' before it merges at the tranny crossmember. This leaves #s 3 & 4 cylinder with very little merge time.
The situation is I have an odd ball sound like you hear one or two individual cylinders out of wack. When I get on it I blow the block heater plug on that side and loose antifreeze. As far as coolant back up pressure in the block is concerned that potential problem has been addressed.
Does any body know how much pipe needs to be installed prior to the two sides merging together so the eight cylinders have a clean harminic tone?

It's not really possible to get a 'clean, harmonic tone' from a v-8....unless you have tuned headers that have one primary tube from each side that crosses over to the collector on the opposite side. Due to the design of a v-8, the cylinders fire unevenly throughout 720 degrees of crank rotation... All firing pulses are at 90 degrees, but they fire from R-L-R-R-L-R-L-L. The two that fire together on each bank throughout the 720 degrees gives you that strange sound.

Thanks, I get now.

So I probably have a R-R-L-L surge going with the lengths of pipe.

VTAGAS; if you have room after the headers at twice the primary length install a X crossover in "center" between the collectors. Check out Burns Stainless for ideas. The exhaust sound frequency will change as well as volume in Db and exhaust scavenging.
I had to rejet after making my new exhaust system. Friends told me it sounded mean and powerful, until I had a friend do a WFO driveby I didn't know how great it sounded.
It's nice to be a police emergency backup person as I'm on an island 6 x 2 miles in size and a 68 F 250 with exhaust is noticed among the world of cookie stamped plastic.
