The fellas at AAMCO tell me the source of the hard shift at 15 mph, the shudder at 25 mph (up or down, coasting or accelerating), and under dash slapping noise at 35 and big vibration at 45+ is a tranny with a small piece of the clutch found in the drain pan, and a bad transfer case...fortunately, they can fix all this for between $4000 to $4500! Ain't that nice? I'm thinkin' maybe I could get used or rebuilt units installed elsewhere for less than that, so I'm happy to take any suggestions. Would this be a good time to upgrade or switch to something else (C-6?) powertrain-wise? This is for a '90 Bronco with the 5.8l engine, and E4OD, about 120,000 miles...
get another opinion, the tranny may infact be toast but the other vibs could be bad ujoints, loose pinnion nut on your rear axle things like that. you could swap over to a C-6 or an AOD if you want the od gear. the tcase could be picked up cheap at most autowreckers.
Thanks for the info...any advantage to the AOD or C-6 vs the E4OD? Other posts seem to suggest the E4OD sucks...are the others any better/more reliable?
The c-6 is the stout one but only a 3 speed. the AOD is good in my opinion. if its built it can handle alot of snot but look to spend about 1200-1500 for that. c-6 can be built for around 600-800 . either way its alot cheaper then the E4OD
After a transmission overhaul at a mom & pop tranny shop in my 92' E4OD AND a reseal service at AAMCO a year later ($1,200 + $550) I would consider a high performance E4OD from JET if the price was right... even a thousand over what I paid for would be reasonable I think. You have to call them for a price as they don't show their prices on their web site.

Wow! Great idea! As I was walking to the train to get home I quickly stopped in at a little mom & pop general mechanic shop and asked if they could swap in a used unit...when I told the mechanic it was a '90 Bronco he told me he had a '91 and that I ought to try the MLPS first...(quite a brotherhood, we Bronco owners!) I didn't know that MLPS meant "manual lever position sensor"...maybe that also explains why "N" is actual "D", etc on the shift lever...or is that another animal? Anyway, I think I'll try the MLPS thing first. Thanks!
Thanks for the info...I'm gonna try that mom & pop shop to see what they think (maybe try mlps first)...if indeed I need to go the replace route I'll give the ckperformance deal a try...what about the transfer case? Any big diff there? Thanks for everything!
Bigric-
Thanks...didn't think about computer stuff...hey, how do I know if I've got a bad transfer case? Aamco guys say it was dry, sort of....(some fluid in the pan, they say, and some play to the diff)...but I haven't seen any fluid where the truck is parked...the outside of the case is a little "wet" but clear and clean, so maybe a gasket is leaking? What stuff tells you "oh ****, the transfer case is shot!"
Thanks!
If it's making a lot of noise, or it doesn't turn the front and rear output shafts when in 4WD, or there's a lot of play on any of the shafts. Transfer cases can be rebuilt, BTW. There was a guy who had a step-by-step either here or in the Superford galleries when he rebuilt his BW1356; if I recall, however, you've got the BW1345 in your model year.
ive heard of some people swap back to a different tranny and leave the ecu they currently had. but probably should replace it with the correct one if possible. its not hard at all. takes about 15mins and is located in the driver side kick panel.
