I bought my '96 AWD V8 used with 34K on it it and right before the warranty went out I started experiencing intermitant power steering failures. At the time I chalked it up to a bad PS pump. One year and a day past my PS pump waranty, it started again. Keep in mind it is very intermitant. It will go a week or more where I am with out PS 90% of the time and then work flawlessly for 6 months. The curious thing about it is it doesn't feel like just "no power steering", it almost feels like there is a strong resistance while I am trying to negotiate a turn. This has been quite dangerous as at times I will be struggling to negotiate a turn in the road and then suddenly I have PS again and the wheel jerks. Is this simply bad luck with PS pumps or should I suspect this as a simptom of another cause, i.e. front end-linkage? Also there is a pop or thunk noise from the front end almost every time I start from a complete stop. It doesn't make the tell-tale popping-rock grinding sound when turning corner though, so I've ruled out the joints. Any suggestions?
