Well,I always thought "check out" meant, check out that fine looking babe working at the cash register,so when I see a sign that says "self check out" I pass.
what i hate is when the person using a debit card or credit card is holdong up the line when their card wont swipe...they try it and try it and it dont work....that or the idiot who gets his total and then begins counting change out....i dont mind debit users because im one of them as i rarely carry cash but dont hold up the line with it.

I deal mainly with checks and keep a small amount of cash in my wallet. When I'm in the line waiting....I fill out the check and then add the dollar amount at the till. It doesn't take any more additional time than most transactions.
We all seem to have a lot of the same beefs here. Why is it people cannot read the lane designation...15 items or LESS DANGIT! People just don't seem to care about anyone but themself. When I'm in line, I know what irritates me and I do everything as fast and efficiently as I know how to speed things along. I have actually been thanked and or comment on by the person behind me for being so thoughtful. ( where's my halo? )
The bottom line is that murphy's law always works well for me. If someone SLOW can find a way to get in front of me they do. It doesn't matter if I'm shopping or driving down the highway. I can be the only truck on the road and some fool will race to get out in front of me, causing me to hit the brakes....then drive along at a leisurely pace of 45 mph in a 70 mph zone. And of course, there will be either too much traffic approaching or double yellow lines.

My wife runs some of the automated checkouts at here local union store.
We get a laugh about how dumb some of the people are that don't understand the machines and have so many problems.
Well, THAT'S a great customer service viewpoint !!!
Maybe if the MACHINES were more intuitive they wouldn't baffle the customer!
And without customers... even something as large as an Enron or WorldCom can fail !
you might remember that !
I promise you,
I've forgotten more information than you about those there puters and all....
and I thought they were set up pretty badly...
tried it once and said to he...ck with them...
I don't ahve a lot of patience with things that don't work like they SHOULD !
but if you have arrogant people setting them up, they can be near useless !!
i have a similar problem, only tom thumb doesnt have the self check out. instead at like 8pm they have 2 check outs open and they have lines about 20 people deep. it takes forever to buy 1 thing! everyone usualy just crowds around in one big huddle until it moves. then we make our ways into the line. been known to start up quite a few conversations with people in those lines. some of who i wish i didnt.
I love the self check-outs. I worked at a Winn-Dixie when i was in highschool so I know them pretty well. The best thing about the self checkouts is that most people are either afraid of them or just cant stand them so there is never a line. Get in, and get out...thats what i like.
Self-checkout??!! Never seen one, heck, never heard of one till I read this thread. We don't have any around here...we're just now getting the pay-at-the-pump gas stations! The biggest store in town is Kmart, and they have about 12 checkout lanes, usually only 2 open at a time. I hate that place. Maybe we'll get out of the 20th century up here in another 10 years or so... -TD
I do like pay at the pump stations, mostly because I always use a credit card and I don't trust my cards and numbers to some of the savvy characters who work the night shift at gas stations. I also go to the gas station at odd hours and hate when I need gas and the stations are closed.
Why is it they won't open more than 2 registers??? Imagine how you could increase business if people knew you were the only shop in town where they would never wait more than a minute in line. Hmm, maybe it's time to open my own shop.
you go to lowes or home depot with $500 worth of goods in your little basket, i want a human generating a real receipt, with detail. i don't care if they know my name or not,i just want to be treated like a customer, you know, the guy that pays their wages. my only self check experience left me so wanting, i just about started throwing stuff. customer service in all industries has gone down the toilet, and gone in a hurry. cell phone fails, i go to the cell phone store where they were more than happy to take my money. they say"we can't process warranty stuff here" give me a 800 number thats in india.end up in an argument with an indian woman weather or not phone failure is my fault. phone won't work, and only support is 6000 miles away. finally worked out, but way more trouble than it was worth. was damn near canceling whole contract. i simply think my time is worth more than that.
What twists my cecklers is the floor crew chasing me with that LP powered floor buffer, one night at wal-mut i'd just love to toss an 50grit disk under one of them.lol I woud never do it but It's fun to talk crap.
I know that the floor is a job that has to be done at night, but tempt me not my fuse is gone and I get no sleep these days. Do not chase me but Do get your baggy pants wraped up in that thing, or just sit on it and spin. weeeeee! hehehe.
