Gas Gauge stuck on "E" HELP!!!!

Sounds like either a bad wire or a bad sender. Trace the wires back to the fuel tank and look for a break or a worn spot where it might be grounding out on the frame somewhere. Otherwise, the sender is bad and it is attached to the fuel pump, which is inside the tank. Your choice to use the odometer to monitor fuel mileage or drop the fuel tank and replace a working fuel pump...

Gas Gauge stuck on "E" HELP!!!!

The fuel float in the fuel tank has probility filled up with gas. you can try to get all the gas out the souder any leaks in it or just go down to your local ford parts store and they should have one for around 5 dollars. you will have to drop the tank and buy a special fuel line disconnection kit to get to it. it takes 2-3 hours the first time.

Gas Gauge stuck on "E" HELP!!!!

thanks for the info, i was wondering is there a connector to the sending unit that is easly accessible? I was wondering if maybe i could disconnect the connection, then put a varible resistor in place( to act as the sending unit) i can isolate the gauge/run versus dropping the tank? but where is this connector at???

The way the sending unit works is like being at the beach and going out in the water with a empty 5 gallon bucket that is sealed shut. Now if you go wade out in the water and hold the bucket in place. since the bucket floats it will go up and down with the waves. Your arm will move up and down as the wave comes in. Now to simulate the problem you have, drill two small holes in the bucket. The bucket will now fill up with water and sink to the bottom. In your car instead of a bucket it has a small brass float.
To fix the problem you have to remove the tank from the car then remove the sending unit and fuel pump assembly from the tank. There is a arm on the sending unit at the end of that arm is a brass float that is filled with gas. All you have to do is remove the old one and replace it with the new float. Put the sending unit and fuel pump assembly back in the tank and put the tank back on the car.

Hope this helps,
Chris

There is no good way around what you need to do. Like the last poster said, most likely the problem is the float. In order to replace it, you MUST drop the tank and remove the fuel pump/sending unit from the tank.

A word of caution, before you re-assemble everything, hook the cable up to the pump unit and check the gague operation out by lifting the arm and seeing gague movement. The last thing you want to do is re-assemble everything only to find out the sending unit is bad also which means dropping the tank again. Trust me. I have been there.
