I'm thinking about getting rid of the A4ld in my '89 Ranger, and going to a 5speed stick. Do I need to change the PCM, or will my current one still work? (Yes, I realize there are more issues than just that one, but I've been working on rounding up the other stuff I need.) -TD
OK, thanks Ken. Someone told me today that I would have to change it, but that didn't quite sound right to me. At this point, it's all up in the air anyway. The trans that I got, that I thought was a M5R1 turned out to be a Toyo Kogyo, and it's not in good shape. The guy at the trans shop thought I might get 4 months out of it, and he said parts are very expensive for it. So I'm looking at: Rebuilding A4ld= $1200; rebuilding Toyo Kogyo= $800; buying M5R1 (if I can find one that's good) =$500/$1000; and I still have bearing noise in the bottom end of the 2.9. I'm starting to think about a 5.0 swap. I have enough parts to build one, I have an H.O EFI, and a good AOD. It might actually be the cheapest way to go, it's just that the downtime would be longer. (BTW, still working on the article, it might be a bit wordy, like me!) -TD
