I Have A 86 F250 4xw With 302. I Want To Make A Hunting Buggy With This Pickup--strip The Bed And Most Of Body, Add A Platform, Add Big Tires 38 To 42 Inch.
The 86 Is Efi And I Would Much Prefer A Carborator. It's Much Easier To Make A Carb'ed Engine Run When Your In 3 Feet Of Water Back In The Florida Swamp 3 Miles From The Nearest Road. What Problems Do I Have, If I Try To Convert To A Carb? I Know I Need An Intake Manafold And Carb; But What Problems With The Computer And Control--timing, Etc.
Being that you live in Florida, you know that they don't do emissions testing here. I personally would keep the fuel injection just for the economy. If you go with a carburetor, you are eliminating the computer and the emissions devices (in a nutshell). You would also have to convert to a Duraspark II ignition system (distributor and module and coil).
I Understand About Economy And Emmisions But This Vehicle Will Never See A Highway Once It Is Converted To A Hunting Buggy. Fuel Economy Is Not That Important. Most Important Is Making It Run Deep In The Back Woods. I'm An Older Guy And Hunt By Myself Mostly. I Don't Like To Walk Out.
Now Sure I Understand About The Ignition Change. It Presently Has A Distributor, Coil, Rotor Button, Etc. How Can I Id If It Is A Dura--ii Or Iii?
I believe that you have a TFI ignition. Here is an address for a hybrid ignition that you may want to try. www.carbdford.com/tech/HEI/hei.htm It is cheap and is an alternative. They also give directions. You may want to consider getting afermarket cylinder heads and a cam change. Comp Cams XTREME ENERGY line is a good choice. Maybe even some headers and run dual exhaust.
