OK, i just had a 1986 f150 2wd 4spd 300 given to me. The guy told me that he was going to the store and the truck started acting up and blew black smoke out the exhaust. He came out of the store and on the way home it acted up again, but this time it lost power and gave one huge backfire. I can't get any spark and i didnt know where to start, i figured coil. Think it might have blown up when it backfired, i know my uncles 351 had the distributor gear fall off and it sounds like that did the same thing this did, would that explain the loss of spark though???? Any help is apreciated.
No, that's not it. That truck is history. Just ship it to me here in Tennessee and I'll dispose of it properly for you...LOL. Seriously, I need someone to give me one of those. That would give me pretty much everything I need to fix up both of my F100s. Yeah, that does sound like a stripped timing gear though. Not too bad to fix. Good luck.
i looked at the distributor today and pulled the cap off. i am able to grab the rotor button and pull the guts out of the inside of the distributor, it spins freely and everything, would he gear on the distributor falling off cause this
Yes the gear falling off would cause that. But that is just the start now you have to find the gear and see how much of it is worn off. If too many of the filings are being pumped with the oil the out look for that engine is getting grim without a complete rebuild
got it fixed, it sheared the pin off the gear and dropped it into the engine, gear was still in tact with the pin pieces still in it, got it put all back together and its runnin gret
