I've got a problem I was getting ready to install my K&N Air Intake Kit this weekend and called my dad which is a mechanic. He was telling me to put it on after I get my lift installed (which is being done by Ford) and to make sure I keep all the factory part to the intake system that is stock on my truck. The reason is #1. Ford will void the warranty for the engine because I modified the intake is this true? #2. the reason to keep my factory intake is that no one will clear my truck for a smog with a modified intake system is this true? If so what is the point of putting the intake system on. This may only be true for California, but does anyone know if this is true?
California has both pass at the pipe and visual inspections. Non-stock parts that do not have a CARB number will make you fail visual inspection. Check the ads for speed parts. Some say "off road only", some say CARB approved.
Keep all the stock stuff and get good at install/reinstall.
Your Dad's right about the smog part here in CA. (I'm in San Diego too).. I almost failed smog just for having an aftermarket air filter cover on my car. Luckily I had the "stock" cover in the trunk & the smog tech let me put it on.. As far as voiding a warranty, I think it would depend how nit picky the dealer was.. I've heard that if they find turbo dusting (diesel) or a MAF plugged w/ filter oil, some dealers are declining warranty claims.. Hasn't happened to me or anyone I know so it's just hearsay at this point..
I just went on to a smog website and found some information and they said as long as it has an "EO" number it is fine and it will pass both the visual and regular test. Bad thing is the kit I bought the K&N 77 series does not yet have that number it won't pass til around the end of the year. AHHH Which is fine since I own a 03 truck and won't need a smog til like 08.
Also the lady at K&N told me the kit I bought actually runs a little hot and is not the better kit of the 2 I should of gotten the 55 series. Which also cost $65.00 more then the one I got. Either way this sucks and I am not happy. I did find something that says that the warrenty will not be voided just because I added an aftermarket part.
