I have recently purchased a used 02 F150 4.2L V6. I enjoyed the test drive very much. The only problem i had was with the 5 speed. I have had 2 other 5 speeds in the past and realize it takes a little bit to get used to a new one. I bought and am very pleased. EXCEPT for one problem. 4 out of 7 mornings It takes some serious work to get my truck into ANY gear, including reverse. After a couple days, i took it to the service department and they confirmed the problem and replaced the master clutch cylindar. Worked great. 2 days later i was back to the same problem. At 4:30am getting ready to go to work, it won't go into gear... ANY gear... I took it back a week later and they cannot duplicate the problem and told me that I should not push the clutch in all the way and that will solve my problem. Here I am 2 weeks later with the same problem, having veried my clutch use. Has anyone else had this problem and found a fix? Im not very car-savvy. I can put gas in it, change the oil and drive it. Anything else i rely on the car shop. This cannot be a normal thing. Thanks.
Sounds like a loose, bent or broken shifter linkage. Take it to a real mechanic, an independent. The yahoos that they hire at dealerships hardly qualify.
Matt I'm gonna have to argue with you
Most of us dealer techs know what we're doing. Sure, there are some that dont but generally I feel that dealer techs know more about the vehicles that they work on than the independent guys. We get a lot of vehicles in that independent type places have spent mega hours on and thrown tons of parts at and they still arent fixed.
Ok, enough of that rant
Hi Rob and welcome to the forum
One of the more common causes of your problem is a leaking clutch slave cylinder. It hardly has to leak at all to suck air in and then it wont work properly. It may have worked better for a few days after the master cylinder was replaced because when they did that they had to bleed the clutch too. That would remove the air out of the system and then after a few days the air is back and so is the problem.
If it wont go into gear and you have to go somewhere you can try pumping the clutch pedal a bunch of times and see if that helps or just put it in gear before you start it and then shift carefully.
I will take it back to the dealer first and ask about the leaking clutch slave cylinder, and see if they are check it and fix it. That still does not solve the problem, i'll have another tech look at it, and see. This is a pretty cool forum. Im learning quite a bit. Thanks again guys
i had a pretty similar problem on an old jeep i have even changed alot of the same parts you have changed finally i gave up on fixing it myself and took it to an old mechanic in town and he just about tore the whole thing apart before he found that the throw out bearing was going bad he said the same thing i did that we had never seen one do that before in our experience they just stop working one day but after he changed the throw out bearing it was just fine that might not be your problem but the symptoms sound alot like mine did
I guess I didn't mean to say that ALL dealer mechanics were bad, I've never dealt with a Ford dealer.... All my Fords are old trucks.... the only dealers I've had to deal with are dodge / jeep dealers.
I've seen a lot of things cause this kind of problem, and everything that everyone has said here can cause it.
