93 EXPLORER BACKFIRE
My wife's 93 Explorer had a low order backfire on acceleration after the engine was fully heated up; but, operation otherwise seemed pretty good. I found plugs #5 and #2 fouled with a gray ash scale. Replacing and regaping the plugs solved the backfire problem and naturally greatly improved performance. This Explorer also suffers the "missing motor oil syndrome" (about a quart per 1000 miles). Thanks to information on this board, I now know I need to replace the lower intake manifold gasket and/or retorque the bolts. By-the-way, plug #3 can easily be reached through the right wheel well with the wheels cut to the left. Many thanks to all for the great information found here.
