Ford Explorer towing capacities

Anyone know the towing capacities of a 98+ explorer? I'm interested in towing a 24ft cuddy boat, trailer has tandem brakes. Will it tow ok? Anyone have experience towing large boats with explorers? Thanks to all. Josh

Sounds like that might be a little more than you can handle. You need to find out the weight of the boat and trailer, with all the gear and fuel that you're taking in the boat so you can get an accurate weight. Then check the sticker on the door and it should tell you what you're rated to tow. Even still, I bet the tongue weight alone will make the truck wnat to do wheelstands and it will definitely bottom out the springs in the back. Look to spend some $$$ getting it properly equipped for towing if you're able to pull something that big...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Aug-02 AT 09:58 AM (EST)]Definatly invest in a tranny cooler and class 3 hitch if you don't already have them. A set of add-a-leafs (Summitracing.com) will greatly help and a aux oil filter (Summitracing.com) will help with keeping your oil a little cooler. Basically, you are going to be putting a big strain on your X, so you want things to run as cool and smooth as posible. Also make sure your fluids (oil, tranny and diffy) are all good (think about going to synthedic).
I pull my 14' tandem with the B2 on it (5500 COMBINED) and I have no problems, but I don't take off very fast and I start to slow down before a stop alot sooner too. Good luck and drive safe.

5,000 lbs is max , with that size boat it is going to be the tail wagging the dog. Its not very comfortable feeling with that much weight behind ya.
you need the factory towing pkg also ,it has the heavey duty radiator and trans cooler

Just my .02

According to Ford the tow wieght for mine('99 XLT 4wd w/SOHC) is 6,000 and when the trailer store looked it up in thier computer it said 5,680... I know alot of it has to do with 2wd/4wd, which engine and also if you have the factory tow package or not, so I guess we need to know more about his X to give a definate answer. Most trailer stores can look up your vehicle in thier database and tell you what the tow capacity for your vehicle is...
