I am the proud owner of a new 2002 Explorer XLT. My wife and I traded our well-used 1996 Windstar van on the new Explorer yesterday. Is there anything particular that I need to do/watch for with this vehicle? It seems to be very nice, and very well-built. It is Oxford white with the graphite interior. It has the 4.0L V-6 and the 4-speed auto tranny. It also has the towing package, third row seat, rear AC, and running boards. Although we have not really had time to judge it yet, we are pleased initially with the quality and performance of this vehicle. Only time will tell, I suppose. At least I am free of the headaches of the aging Windstar.........
Congrats on the new purchase. I have not ridden in a new X yet but I have sat in them and played with all the controls. They seem like really nice vehicles. From all I've read, the ride and handling is light years ahead of the old models. I'm sure you'll enjoy.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Aug-02 AT 06:48 PM (EST)]I saw a new one next to an old one and the new ones are so much bigger outside, its hard to believe they handle so much better. I rode in a new limited and it was such a nice truck!!. Although the owner says his 94 limited rides a little nicer. We did the twisties a little and it seemed to stay real flat in the corners.
Believe it or not, the new X is only 2.5 inches wider and the same length as before. The wheelbase has been stretched and I'm not sure about the height.
Finally somebody else who recently got a 3rd seater........Congrats..
Hey Red,
By any chance did you get the cargo cover that comes standard with the XLT or was it missing since you got the 3rd seat option??????
I just picked up my own 02 XPL over the weekend and the cargo cover was nowhere to be found.
I'm being told by the dealer it's deleted if you get the 3rd seat, but he wasn't totally sure. Then others are telling me that they did get a cover or know someone who did. So I'm in a tizzy as to who has the right answer, the dealer or other posters.........
I also recently purchased a 2002 with the 3rd seat. My wife asked the dealer about the cargo cover and the dealer responded that it's one or the other, not both. I got the 3rd seat, no cover.
Also recently purchased XLT with 3rd row. I read in the Ford brochure that the cargo cover is not included with the 3rd row seat and confirmed this with the dealer.
You can purchase the cargo cover at the dealership or online (which will be cheaper). Good thing to have if you do not use the third row often (since the cover doesn't fit behind the 3d row if not in place). . . .
