Hi!
Im from Sweden, so please let my spelling be "bye gone"...
Im about to buy an explorer-97>-99 but im goin to import it from Germany, and im not so convinced that the dealers creds are thet great..
So i want to check it my self, how do i know that i got the big engine (207hp) or the 5 speed automatic?
Is there in the vin code any clues so i can find it out?

For the 97-99 Explorer, the engine can be identified by the 8th digit in the VIN. An "E" indicates a 6 cylinder, and a "P" indicates an 8 cylinder. I'm not aware of a VIN digit that indicates the type of transmission. Perhaps someone else can help....

I've just found out the various transmission codes.
"D" 5speed aut
"M" 5speed Mazda
"U" 4speed aut od
But where do i find the trans, codes on the car
is there like a big info plate somewhere

The transmission type can be found on the label inside the driver's door under code "trans". There is also an engine code "X" for the 4.0L OHV (160HP) engine. As mentioned earlier "P" is for the 5.0L V8, "E" is for the 205 HP ('97 & '98), 210 HP ('99 - '01) Explorer. For the years you are looking at, the only transmission offered on the V8 was the 4-speed automatic, on the SOHC (VIN E) is the 5-speed automatic and on the base OHV either the 5-speed automatic or manual can be gotten.
