Hi Guys/Gals, My buddy has a old Bronco that runs good but looks rough, especially the chrome. The bumpers in particular are almost barren of chrome. He's going to sand, scrape, brush, whatever, to remove the loose stuff and wants a chrome look without going the whole plating route. Does anyone know of any spray-on products that look somewhat shiny like chrome? He's hoping for more than silver paint. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.
I think Pep Boys has some new paint out. I know the colors were pretty shiny. I am not sure if they had a good chrome or not. I don't think any paint will be as good as chrome, but it certainly costs less. Give it a try.
You can buy a "chrome" paint. I've tried it, and it's not as shiny as real chrome. An alternative is to paint the bumpers a satin black. My Bronco came from the factory with black bumpers, and it looks pretty good......
Thanks for the info guys, I'll pass it on. Does he have to prepare the bumper in a special way to make the paint stick to the remaining chrome? As I mentioned, he plans to prepare the surface just like he was going to apply spray paint. Thanks again.
I had a 92 Ranger STX that came with black bumpers. I took them off , sandblasted them, and had a buddy at a Rhino Linings shop spray them black and they looked awesome and I got alot of nice comments on them. Murph...
scroll to the bottom. the photos of the grill with the chrome spray paint was only after a few coats. i have since placed several more coats on it and it does looks better (more chrome look). of course, it's still not as good as the real thing but not bad. i've already finished one can of paint and working on the 2nd, i'll have probably 8-9+ coats on this thing when i'm done.
as mentioned in the link above, you will need to protect the chrome paint with some type of clear. however, you cannot spray regular clear spray paint on it, it'll turn dull silver. that's where johnson's future floor acrylic comes in. haven't tried it on the grill yet but have with some other test pieces of plastic sprayed with chrome paint. the test pieces produced very positive results, no dullness of the chrome, adds a bit of shine and protects with a nice clear coat. i would probably suggest several thin layers of future also.
i'll post some pics of the can of chrome paint i used and a what a bottle of future looks like. (tonight, when i get home)
thanks! will post some pics when it's done and on the X. sprayed my last layers of chrome paint on it last night. will let it sit for several days and hit it with future.
