1999 150 shifter
I am not going to be able to give you any answers but I do own a 2003 F150 with the 5 speed manual. And I have read most every thread on all the forums where folks write about the Mazda manual tranny.
Most everyone would like a better shifter. No one seems to have been successful in upgrading the setup and some have also changed fluid with little help.
I love my F150. Problem free -- totally. The clutch is fine and smooth but the shifter has to be coaxed or perhaps I should say finessed. Solid but slow throws works best. And it helps to wait a second or 2 between downshifts to avoid any gnashing of teeth. Have also learned that when stopped, if one shifts to 2nd gear and then to 1st, the shifter slides into first.
I am sure you know all this already.
It will be interesting to see if any new thoughts are written about the 5 speed in this thread.
