Exclamation Windshield Wiper problem

I have been experiencing a problem with the wipers on my 91 Explorer. When I use the wipers in the low and high speed they work fine. When I use them in the intermittent mode, they will cycle a couple of times and then stop working. They will not come back on after that happens even if I switch back to the regular mode or try to use the washer. Everything comes back to normal after I shut the truck off and start it again a few minutes later.

Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps a circuit breaker or relay? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

If this is wired the same as my 87 Ranger it sounds like a bad governor. See if you can find one at the boneyard & swap it.

Bad governor huh? Any idea where its located? Under the hood or dash? I was thinking of replacing the relay and seeing if that corrects the problem.

Dont have a manual for yours, on my 87 Ranger it's above the emergency brake pedal with 9 wires attached.

OK, I'll have to look. I checked the parts books last night and found out that there isn't a relay for the wipers. I was told that the problem could lie with the multi-switch on the column or the motor itself.

Anyone else have some thoughts? I really would like to fix this this weekend, thanks!

Your best bet is to go here www.helminc.com & buy an "Electrical & vacuum troubleshooting manual" for your 91 for 20 bucks. I have this manual for my 95 Taurus & for my 87 Ranger. If you had this manual & a volt meter, it would be simple to test for voltage from the wiper switch at the governor and if you had voltage there but no voltage leaving the governor, you would know for sure that the governor was the problem.

I have a read a few posts in the forum for others who seem to have the same problem. I am going to replace the multiswitch on the column and hopefully that solves my problem (if it doesn't, well I am only out $20). Any idea if one for 1994 Explorer fits the 1991, they look identical.

Good luck with it and keep us posted. Give Napa or Autozone a call, they can tell you if both trucks use the same switch.

Yes. Both trucks use the same switch. Here's the part # if anyone needs it: F2TZ-13341-B
