Red face Overheating Help from the GURUS!!

I towed a 4000lb trailer this weekend from KY to NC and back. Every other time I have towed with it it has never got hot. This time though, It got all the way to the top of the NORMAL bracket and then it took it about 5 or 6 miles to cool back down halfway. It normally operates over the O and barely moves when climbing a hill then immediately drops back down.

Initially, I thought it was my SCMT overfuelling so I reprogrammed it to stock. I am running a Banks DP and a 5" exhaust. Coolant, SCA and Oil levels are fine.

Any body have any Ideas to try.

Maybe it is time to pressure flush the radiator. I recently did mine and it made some difference on overall temps. Just my thoughts.

Also when was the last time you changed the thermostat? Could be just getting old and needs a new one. Cheap part and easy fix.

How many miles on engine? Was the engine fan coming on?

Don't know how many miles are on your rig, but it might be the water pump starting to go?? I'd definitely flush and re-fill and check the thermostat first (WAY cheaper) but that's my first thought. Also while you're at it make sure your SCA levels are good in the coolant.

1. Thermostat
2. Pump
3. Flush system including radiator
4. Get an aftermarket real "coolant temp gauge"

I Just Turned over 130,000 Miles on the trip. This makes 29k happy miles for me and 101k for a landscaper pulling bobcats. SCA Levels are Fine (NAPA TEST STRIP) as I add Them Myself. I believe that I am Going to flush the entire system and replace the Tstat, Then hope it is not the water pump for $$ sake

HeatStroked, I keep on thinking about getting a REAL Guage for temp and oilpressure too. Any brand reccomendations

I have installed gauges 4-6 and one was a coolant temperature gauge.

I compared the coolant temperature gauge to the factory idiot gauge and at about 160 - 165 degrees the factory gauge will sit in the middle. My PSD runs at about 190 degrees and the factory gauge still sits in the middle.

Buy a gauge that matches your others, if you have them. I have Autometers but there is wide variety of choices and price ranges out their to choose from.
