V10 Big Trouble!

My 98 E350 Class C with 76,000 miles is now at Redland's Truck in Southern CA. I had to have it towed it. It started to overheat coming into CA. Even though I never let the temp get to the danger level, it would not turn over. I am hoping (and this would be good news???) that it is a head gasket that is causing a hydrolic lock.

I first smelled coolant and pulled off to check. I saw a little foam in the plastic tank. I added some water and then drove another half hour. I stopped again and could tell that the coolant was going somewhere but there was none on the ground. I added more fluid and a few miles down the road, I could see the coolant boil out the of the block. I would have guessed that it was the pump or thermostate except it happened so slowly.

The shop has not gotten to the job yet but while talking to one of the guys in the know, he said that the V10 is an expensive engine to repair. He said that if there is something serious I should consider getting a Ford crate engine for about 7K installed.

Any thoughts?

Too Hot

If it comes down to replacing the engine, do not cut corners. Get a Ford Factory Replacement Drop in motor or at least a complete long block. The re-man motors outside of Ford control are pretty bad.. You might get lucky and only need a set of re-man heads....Again buy good parts.

We had the same problem on our 1997 Shasta with V10 engine. It had 48552 miles on it. We'd driven it and it was great sounded great etc. When we got back from vacation it made a loud noise when we went to start it and white smoke coming out of its tail pipe. Towed to Ford the rod was bent and the #1 cyclinder scored. New engine required. The head gasket was ok, the head had no cracks.

Did they check your oil cooler?

Thanks....
I doubt that they checked anyghing. I think they just saw coolant in the oil and said new engine. I am having it towed to a place where I can work on it and tear it apart myself. I may be a little rusty, but it is within my ability. I am having trouble finding any manuals. I guess I will have to go to Ford and get theirs. Even if I tear it down and find that it needs a new motor, at least I will know. They said:
We Put drive shaft in, started it up, drove into bay, shut it down, wouldn't restart because it was hydrolic locked and pushed it out of the bay.

The more I thought about it the more upset I was that they didn't want to do anything but replace the motor. What the hey, I might as well have a diesel and gas engine apart in my garage

Again, thanks for the words. It is nice to hear from people and their expeiences. I would never thought of oil cooler. Since I saw compression, I am sure it is a head.

Keep us posted as to the cause if you find it. The Ford dealer was sure it'd be the head gasket, but when they checked the gaskets were ok. The head had no visual cracks and when it was sent off for inspection there were no non-visual cracks. Since we couldn't afford to keep having them look for the why we just fixed it. And, unfortunately didn't have them check the oil cooler.

Our extended warranty (CSP) endorsed by Good Sam camping Club refused to cover the engine because it had a pre-existing condition, etc etc... or some loophole. When we told them a lubericated mechanical part failed (bent rod, scored cylinder) it was "yes", but you have to tell us why. The bottom line they didn't want to pay & didn't!!

I plan on taking a lot of pictures and posting them as a blog on my web site because there is a void of information on v10 internal maintenance.
