Front end (D44) swap question

Im wondering for when I do go to put a d60 in the rear of my truck, Is it possible to take the inners of a d44 ffrom a 3/4 ton truck and out in my half ton d44? Or just the ring and pinion. Or would it just be simpler for me to buy the correct gearing for the 1/2 ton d44.
thanks guys.
I asked a buddy and he said no because the 1/2 d44 is high pinion reverse cut or something.

I don't understand your question? You are talking about swapping gear's from a Dana 44 over to a Dana 60?

dana 60 and Dana 44 part's are not interchangeable.

I know what he's talking about - what year? Not that I know which is which, but it does make a difference, I'm sure ...

The reverse cut/high pinion (I think) is different than the standard low-slung pinion gears.

Don't know how accurate, but here's a quicky google link:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=fo...ich.edu&rnum=1

Tend to believe it, give or take a year or two...

It is my understanding (of course I could be wrong...have been before), that the d44 is the same for both half and 3/4 tons. The only difference is the outer. But the inner gears and ring and pinion are the same. Of course that being said...they do have to be both high-pinion or low-pinion.

Yeah, thats right.
Id want to take the stock 4.10 gears from a 3/4 dana 44 and put them in my 1/2 dana44 to match the dana 60's 4.10 gears in the back.

Oh, its a 78' btw.

My stock highboy 3550 lbs front-end had a 4.09 gear in the front. Just a word of warning

You should be fine...as long as both D44's are the same high or low pinion. Also, if the gears turn out to be 4.09's like Krewat...no problem. You can certainly run them with 4.10's out back. Good luck with it!

Every dana 44 in a 3/4 ton ford ive seen has been low pinion.
So all said I cannot take just the ring an pinion from a low pinion and toss it in my hi pinion , cause the gear pattern or what not is different.

Id have to take the gearing from a fellow hi pinion.
thanks guys

I believe that after 74 or 77.5 all HD 8 lug 44's were HP. I have one at home sitting in a pile of axles.

I have a 76 Dana 44 HD that is low pinion. I believe that all the 3/4 ton axles up to 76 were low pinion and standard rotation. Apparently a low pinion and a high pinion were available in 77. In 78 and 79 all 3/4 ton axles were high pinion reverse rotation. You can't interchange high pinion reverse rotation gears with low pinion gears cause they're standard rotation.

Hope this helps

The axle that is in the rear of your truck should be a 9". They are pretty strong as it is. Plus you would have to convert your front axle to eight lug unless you felt like having 5 lug front and 8 lug rear rims.
