Rejuvenating Rusted Pliers

On my most recent trip to the salvage yard, I found an old pair of lineman's pliers, thoroughly rusted tight in the closed position. Something like this is kind of a challenge, so as a first attempt, I soaked the pliers in kerosene for a day. No go. Nada. Anybody want to suggest some other "miracle" soak?

WD-40, PB Blaster ?????

Probably cheaper to buy a new pair of pliers than the miracle soak.

Clean them up with vinegar or very dilute muriatic acid. Watch them and pull them out when the rust is gone.

Soak them in old motor oil for a week.

This works for many rusted tools.

I welcome all suggestions on this, but I should probably clarify: This is not a matter of getting another (would be 4th) pair of lineman's pliers; it's about restoring the usability of a tool. To me, tools have a sacred quality; use of tools is perhaps one of three or four characteristics that differentiate humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. Secondarily, misuse of tools pushes a hot button. When I see the result of tool use or neglect, I feel sad and a desire to remedy the misuse if possible. Sorry if this sounds like a soapbox speech, but I guess it is.

Thumbs are tools too and also seperate us from much of the animal kingdom. Would be a shame to damage one of them over something that isn't necessary!!! Good luck though!!! Just my lighthearted opinion (Spent Saturday carrying two truckloads of might use someday items to the dump ) My brother finds the tools when we go to the boneyard. I think he's luckier than me.

I soaked a few pairs in the PB Blaster. Worked great, then soaked in oil. Kinda gotta work all that stuff in. The muriatic acid sounds like a good plan too. I know it works great for lots of stuff.

Theres some organic based rust stuff advertised in Walnecks cycle trader (old motorcycle mag). I think it's Rusteco?
I've used it to get the rust off machine gun parts that have been buried for decades & that stuff works. It doesn't even damage paint & after ya use it just duimp it on the garden as fertilizer.
Once ya get the rust off give it a dose of AeroKroil.

Used to see ads in the magazines for something called "Naval Jelly", I got some from a local hardware store and it worked pretty good. Haven't noticed any ads for several years but it might still be available

I'd use a wire wheel to get the surface rust off.

Be careful with the acid. It's corrosive and can do much more harm than good.

i just sprayed a set of duck bill pliers i found over the weekend with some PB blaster and let if soak for a mere 10 mins and they worked like new. they were rough and wouldnt open w/o much effort. im gunna get some ATF and try to clean the rust off, it works great and cleans almost anything...plus when u soak em in ATF it'll lube em also...

Coca-Cola, I've used it to free up rusted lug nuts. Soak em for 2 or 3 days.

You could try heating around the pin with a torch or heat gun.
