I tjought I would reprot the gas milage I have been getting on my first long trip with my 02. The trip is from Washington to Missouri, then to LA then back to Washington. I'm in Missouri now. I sure wish gas was this cheap back home, only $1.67.
Ok, on to the report. Worst tank so far, 18.9. This was driving through a huge thunderstorm and bucking a 30 mph head wind. I like storms but this was a bit much.
Best tank, 24.5. This was from the Big Sky Mt. to Cody, Wy. The speed limit in the park is at best 45 mph and for the most part is all down hill. It was not crowded so there was little stop and go traffic.
Average = 21.5. Not bad IMO. Gearing is 4.10, behind a 5 speed auto, stock 245-75R16 Goodyears. I run 5w-30 Mobil 1 in the engine and Mobil 1 ATF. Mods I have done include Volant air intake, AeroTurbine muffler with a single 2.5 catback exhaust, A.R.E. tonneau. Oh and even though it makes no claim for performance, XM Radio. This is by far the best mod.
I'll post result from the rest of the trip as when I get home I think. I'm not sure I'll internet access the rest of the trip.
Ken, how much more do you think I can sqeeze out with a chip. It would be nice for nothing else than to get rid of the limiter. Nothing worse than being on a 2 lane highway passing some one when it kicks in.
That's not bad at all, I love it when my 4.0 gets 19mpg! I've seen 21mpg out of mine once, driving like a grandma, but I average 17-18.5, sometimes down to 16. Then again, I carry a lot of weight under my canopy. My truck runs around on 31's with 4700lbs on top, and a driver with a very heavy foot. Gas around here finally got back down to $2.00/gallon.
Yeah, i've been thinkin about a chip for my 94. What are the best chips that they make that can be programmed for my intake and exhaust? How much do they run and how much power can you get from them. I guess i dont mind running premium.
99, 4.0L, 4x2, 4dr, SC, 5spd auto, 4.10rear, stock 225x15 tires @ 35 psi. Just before the trip I switched to Texaco synthetic & made a run from Roanoke Va down to Concorde NC.
Best over the road MPG ever, at these speeds, 55-70 mph & got 24.8 mpg.
Filled up, made the trip & returned to the same station, same pump on one tank.
First time I've ever been able to do this on that trip. Had slightly less than 3/4 tank remaining. Maybe could have done 25mpg if I had remembered to leave the tailgate at home.
Got about 2 mpg more than I usually do on that trip, using the same petrol, Chevron regular. Only difference was the synthetic engine lube.
So the old pushrod 4.0L 5spd auto will do pretty good on fuel consumption.
I usually get 22-23 on that trip.
Some of you guys are getting better mileage than I get with a my 2002 3.0 4x4 manual, but then I've heard of folks with a 4.0 getting poor mileage. I'm thinking with the 4.0, maybe more so than with some other vehicles its the driving habits that make the difference.
I took a road trip on my stock Ranger XLT '03 4x4. On a full tank (19.5 gals) I have an average range of 250 miles. Here are some interesting gas prices I have found for 87. I also took pic of the prices too!
Oakland, Ca: $2.49
Yosemite, Ca $2.79
Death Valley (Shell) $3.50
Death Valley (Ind.) $2.69
*Note the two stations are about 1 mile for each other.
Needles, Ca $3.10
Needles???, Az $2.09
*Note the two station are just across the Colorodo River Bridge.
AZ in General $2.00
NM in General $1.90
*Note the gas was a little higher in the cities and much cheaper at the truck stops.
I have a '93 2.3L 4 cylinder, stock tires, pretty much stock everything. Never really had problems with it aside from routine maintenance. Two owners (my dad and I), and it's still on the factory clutch. Odometer reads 166k at the moment, and I consistently get 24 - 26 miles per gallon. I was happy with this before, now I'm astounded. Most of you have newer/better trucks, but lower mpg. I work downtown, 20 minute commute in rush hour traffic, so I'd say I average 40 - 50 mph. Not bad for an 11 year old truck!
Stealth, nothing surprising there. In fact if you didn't get better milage with your 4 banger I would be suprised. I'll also bet the newer Rangers weigh more than the older ones. I know mine almost weighs what my 77 F250 does.
