Help me please, i am trying to find out how to index the timing chain on my 76?? courier with a mazda 1.6l someone else took it apart so i dont know how the marks should line up the chiltons says 10 and 8 oclock but that dosent seem right to me help please!! thanks
Every timing system I have seen indexes the cam gear and the crank gear with small dots on each gear with the top gear dot at 6 oclock and the bottom dot at 12. Try it this way, but before you run the engine, check the #1 piston is at TDC (the timing marks on the balance wheel should be lined up). Also check the valves to make sure both intake and exhaust valves are closed. I would put the gears on the engine without the chain and turn both by hand to make this check before finishing the assembly. Then check it at 10 and 8 like the manual says, to see if I am totally wrong, which wouldn't be the first time!
I haven't seen the engine you have, but after thinking about it for a while, is the cam gear directly above the crank gear, or is it offset to one side? If it is offset, that might make sense for the 10 and 8, however, there still should be some kind of index mark on each gear. Usually, the are lined up with the slot for the woodruff key, but I wouldn't count on that. I just can't picture how 10 and 8 could line up. Please keep us posted.
first courier post ive seen, but welcome. nice to see the truly "old school"rangers in here. you should also post this on the rangerstaton, may have more help for your rare truck
Like was said before, welcome! I had an 80 model, but it had the 2.0 or 2.3 (sorry can't remember what size that motor was) liter Ford engine that had a belt and not a chain, sorry I can't be of any help but I just had to reply and say it was nice to here that there are still some Curriers on the road -
