For the most part, any hardware upgrades performed (like air intake and exhaust) will take a long time to pay for themselves in improved efficiency. On average an air intake and exhaust upgrade will yield around 2 mpg improvement over stock equipment. Have you checked the Throttle position sensor voltage? It might improve things if it turns out that the air/fuel mixture at idle is a little rich. As far as any other hardware improvements are concerned, aerodynamics is an area that the X needs attention. Adding an improved air-dam and lowering the chassis and inch or two and removing the luggage rack could help. All the improvements mentioned can easily be negated by "mpg unfriendly" driving habits like rapid accelleration and excessive speeds on the freeway.
