i have a 96 explorer and the doors wont lock with the remote or keypad on the door or the front drivers side or passenger they will unlock with all the buttons but wont lock the only button that will lock the doors is the rear one by the back hatch if you press the lock button on the remote it thinks its locks because the alarm will go off but it isnt locked
The wiring diagram for a 97 shows that the 2 front door switches are spliced to a pink/yellow wire which connects to the lock relay, which is in the area of the rear washer pump. If yours is wired the same the pink/yellow is open somewhere between the splice & the lock relay.
FYI, the other pink/yellow is wired directly to the liftgate switch
see the following thread for some information that may help. I basically had the exact same problem and had to chase the wiring back from the relay until I found the break. There is a post in there from duke-bearnie that has a lot of good detailed information.
As 87XLT posted here the wire colors in question are pink/yellow in the 97s so you might have to figure out which relay it is and then see if the 96 was the same. You can do this once you locate the relays by using the working lock switch at the rear and feeling which of the relays acts when you lock the doors.... or pull them one at a time until that does not work either.
Once I was able to figure out the place where the break was I installed a jumper wire in place (as I did not chase it down to the exact location, I did not feel like unbundling one area where there were way to many wires coming in) and it began to work just fine.
