My lights went out

Saturday night while returning home the lights on my 1991 Exploder went outr again. This time I was able to check and found they were out on low and high beam. After looking in a manual I figured it had to be either in the main switch or in the dimmer switch. I removed the main switch and found that one of the terminals had gotten hot enough to slightly melt the plug and distort the color on the male terminal. I replaced the switch and now it works fine. My question is did the switch cause it to heat up or did something else cause the switch to heat? Any advice you have is appreciated. Steve

I would go the route of the Tech article "Whiter Whites & Brighter Brights".

That is to use relay's, so the switch will never break-down & possibly cause a fire.

My light switch went on a trip because we had a laptop plugged in the lighter. It was tied in with the lights. Replaced the switch and it is fine with no laptop.
